Automotive locksmiths in Northland - car key and transponder replacement
Lost car keys replaced, vehicles opened without damage, and transponder and proximity keys cut and programmed where the car is sitting.
Losing a car key, or locking yourself out of the car, is a horrible feeling. We appreciate it is a high-stress situation, and our mobile technicians are a phone call away anywhere in the Northland region.
Can a key for your car be made if you have lost them all? Yes.
What if it has a transponder chip inside it? We can help.
Keys locked inside, and you have been told the only way in is a key or a broken window? There is a much more cost-effective solution.
Pinnacle Locksmiths automotive technicians can make keys to your vehicle on site, where they were lost or stolen. Using current equipment we create and program transponder keys, remote keyless entry keys, fobs and push-to-start proximity keys. Our technicians also have the tools and the knowledge to open high-security vehicles without damage.
Why the dealer is not always the answer
A main dealer will often want the vehicle brought to them - which, when the key is lost, means a tow. We come to the car. For most makes on Northland roads we can do the whole job in your driveway, at the boat ramp, or in the supermarket car park where the key went missing.
It is also worth knowing that for some makes the dealer genuinely is the right call. If yours is one of them we will tell you that on the phone rather than after we have driven out to you.
The single most useful thing on this page: get a spare cut before you need one. Replacing a lost key when a working one still exists is a straightforward job. A "lost all keys" job is a different piece of work entirely, and it costs accordingly. A spare is one of the cheapest pieces of insurance you can buy for a car.
What we need from you
Any locksmith cutting a car key must establish that the car is actually yours - it is what stops a stranger having a key cut to it. Please have ready:
- Photo ID - a driver licence is ideal.
- Proof of ownership - registration papers, or the vehicle showing in your name. If the certificate of registration has gone missing with the keys, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi can issue a replacement.
- The make, model and year, and whether it is New Zealand-new or a used import. This genuinely matters: two cars that look identical can take completely different keys.
Keys are not just for cars
We also cut and replace keys for trucks, motorbikes, boats, canopies, roof racks and tool boxes - the ones that always seem to go missing at the least convenient moment.

Questions
Common questions
I have lost every key to my car. Can you still help?
In most cases yes, and at the vehicle. It is a bigger job than cutting a spare from an existing key, so it costs more and takes longer - but it very rarely means a tow to a dealer. Ring with the make, model and year and we will tell you honestly what is involved.
Do I need to bring the car to you?
No. We are entirely mobile and the van carries the cutting and programming equipment. We come to wherever the car is.
How much does a replacement car key cost?
It depends on the make, the model, the year and whether any working key still exists - the range across those variables is genuinely wide, so a number quoted before we know them would be a guess. Ring 0800 243 503 with those details and you will get a real price, not a starting-from figure.
Can you get into my car without breaking the window?
Yes. Opening a locked vehicle without damage is routine work with the right tools. If anyone is telling you the only options are a key or a broken window, get a second opinion first.
My car is a Japanese import. Does that matter?
Very much, and please mention it when you call. Imports frequently use different keys and different programming from the New Zealand-new car of the same name, and knowing in advance is the difference between one visit and two.
Is a spare key really worth it?
It is the best value work we do. A spare cut while you still have a working key is a fraction of the cost of a lost-all-keys job. If your car has one key and one key only, that is the job to book.
Locked out, or want it sorted properly?
One call reaches a mobile locksmith in Northland who will tell you what it costs before any work starts.
