Residential locksmiths in Northland
Whether you are locked out of your home or your house has been broken into, we can help with a prompt, professional service - and we come to you.
Safety, security and peace of mind for you and your family are the whole point of the job. We come to you, anywhere in the Northland region.
If you have lost your house keys, have a door that has never had a key, or would like existing locks rekeyed so that older keys floating around no longer work, we are here to help.
Our technicians will advise the most effective solution for any residential security concern, with no hidden surprises. Locks, keys, restricted keys and high-security systems - we work across all residential locks, with extensive knowledge of electronic and digital options as well as traditional hardware.
Our mobile locksmiths turn up on time with the right tools to finish the job to the Pinnacle standard. We take our workmanship seriously, and we would rather do one job properly than three of them twice.
Rekeying: the job most people do not know they can ask for
You do not always need new locks. Rekeying changes the internals of the lock you already have so that the old keys stop working and a new key takes over. The hardware on your door stays exactly as it is; only the key changes.
It is usually cheaper than replacement, it is quick, and it is the right answer far more often than people realise:
- You have just bought the house, and have no idea how many keys are out there.
- A tenancy has ended.
- A relationship has ended.
- A key has been lost, and it had something identifying on the ring.
- A tradesperson, property manager or cleaner had a key and no longer needs one.
- You have four different keys for one house and would like one.
If you have just moved in, do this before you unpack. The previous owner's friends, family, neighbour who fed the cat, and the agent who did the open homes may all still have a key. Nobody is being sinister; it is simply how houses change hands. A rekey removes the question entirely.
Northland weather is hard on locks
Salt air near the coast, humidity, and a lot of older timber joinery: locks up here work harder than they do in most of the country. A lock that has become stiff, or a key that needs jiggling, is telling you something. It is usually far cheaper to service or replace it while it is merely annoying than after it has failed with you on the wrong side of the door.
The same is true of window latches and stays, which seize long before anyone thinks about them - and which are a favourite way in for anybody who should not be coming in.

Just moved in?
Rekey before you unpack. You have no way of knowing how many keys to your new house already exist.
One key for everything
Front door, back door, garage and sleepout can usually be keyed alike, so one key runs the whole property.

Questions
Common questions
What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?
Rekeying changes the internals so old keys stop working, keeping the lock you already have on the door. Replacing swaps the hardware itself. Rekeying is usually cheaper and faster, and it is the right answer unless the lock is worn out, damaged, or not up to the job in the first place.
Can you make all my doors take the same key?
In most cases yes. Keying alike means the front door, back door, garage and sleepout all open with one key. It is one of the most popular things we do, and people wish they had asked years earlier.
I have just bought a house. Should I change the locks?
You should at least rekey them. Between previous owners, family, neighbours, tradespeople and open homes, there is no realistic way to know how many keys exist. Rekeying settles it in one visit.
My landlord will not fix a broken lock. Can I?
Talk to us and we will tell you what the job involves, but on a rental it needs sorting out with the owner or property manager first. Under the tenancy rules neither a landlord nor a tenant can add, remove or alter a lock without the other's consent - and the landlord has to provide and maintain locks so the property is reasonably secure. Tenancy Services explains both. We do a lot of work for property managers and are used to arranging it that way.
Do you fit locks that are easy for older hands to use?
Yes, and it is worth asking for. Lever handles instead of round knobs, thumb turns instead of a key on the inside, and keypads that remove the need for a key at all can make a real difference to someone with arthritis or limited grip.
